Assemblywoman Noreen Evans was headed toward a decisive win in her bid for the 2nd District Senate seat Tuesday night, fending off Democratic challengers Tom Lynch, Joanne Sanders and David Rosas for a spot on the November ballot.

Evans, a former Santa Rosa City Councilwoman, had pulled in 59 percent of the vote by press time, with 60 percent of precincts reporting.

Tom Lynch followed with 19 percent, Joanne Sanders with 15 and David Rosas with 7.

“I feel really good about my lead,” Evans said late Tuesday.

In November, the Democratic candidate will face Lawrence Wiesner of Santa Rosa, who ran unopposed for the Republican nomination.

The Democratic contender is widely considered a shoo-in in the overwhelmingly Democratic district.

But on Tuesday Wiesner promised a fight.

“There is a big difference between us, so it’s going to be quite heated and quite contested,” the Santa Rosa resident said.

The 2nd Senate District includes all of Santa Rosa; the cities of Sonoma, Healdsburg, Sebastopol, Windsor and Cloverdale; and Humboldt, Mendocino, Lake, Napa and portions of Solano counties.

Incumbent Pat Wiggins, D-Santa Rosa, announced in August that she would not seek a second four-year term. She has since gone on extended medical leave for an undisclosed condition, only returning to the Capitol sporadically.
