Evans
named majority whipPublished: Friday, March 19, 2010 at 4:03 a.m.
Assemblywoman Noreen Evans, D-Santa Rosa, was named majority whip Thursday among
Speaker John Pérez's new roster of caucus leadership, committee and subcommittee
members.
Evans begins the post in the midst of her campaign for a Senate District seat held by retiring Democrat Pat Wiggins to be voted on in the June election.
Evans, who terms out of her 7th Assembly District seat at the end of the year, will immediately leave her post as chair of the Assembly Budget Committee. She held the post through the past year's budget battles, and as chair she presided over a joint session in 2009 to address the budget hole, estimated to be $24 billion at the time.
z, D-Los Angeles, who was sworn in as speaker March 1, appointed two Republicans to lead committees, the first time a Democrat has placed Republicans in such leadership roles since 2002. Santa Clarita's Cameron Smyth will lead the Committee on Local Government and Yucca Valley's Paul Cook will serve as chairman of the Committee on Veterans Affairs.
